July Warrior of the Month
Kelli Kirchner
Describe your athletic background.
I played high school sports year round and ran track at the collegiate level and played rugby at the collegiate and post collegiate level so have always been pretty active.
Why did you start CrossFitting?
When I had our son, Logan, almost 10 years ago, I slowly became less active and was the heaviest I’d been in my life when moving to Iowa in 2007. I was determined to take back control and try and get back in the shape I had been in pre-kids. I’d been doing boot camp for about 2 years a couple times a week when Scott Schultz began talking about this “crossfit” he had been doing at a new gym downtown. After listening to him talk about if for 3 months I decided it was time to give it a try and I have been totally hooked ever since.
Least Favorite exercise?
I would say it depends on the day – if you ask me today it is now the Bear Complex! Most likely the things I feel like I’m not good at or haven’t mastered quite yet – ring dips, toes to bar, strict pullups.
Favorite Exercise?
Anything with weights!!
Advice for Newbies?
Stick with it and put in the effort and time – anybody can do this! Nothing happens overnight (16 months later I’m still waiting for my ring muscle up). The results I’ve seen – support of the other WCFM members, knowledge of the coaches as they know when to push you to get better and not take excuses – it’s all been amazing. CrossFit is by far the most rewarding thing, workout-wise, that I’ve done.
Goals in/outside of the box within the next year (races, hikes, Fran time, cool new tattoos, etc.)?
Wow, I have so many. A ring muscle up! Close to 5 minute times on many of “The Girls”, a 300+lb deadlift and too many more to list them all inside the box. I am planning on doing a Tough Mudder later this year with the WCFM team. I’d like to get a WCFM team together for a CrossFit team competition. And last but not least – I’m going on my honeymoon!!
