Installing the pullup rig at the old gym space
I'm nostalgic after yesterday's post about transferring ownership of WCFM to Kyle. I'm also aware there might be some confusion about paying for September.
  • Anyone who has an autopay subscription through PayPal that starts AFTER the 9th of every month, you do NOT need to pay at any time this month. We will be shutting off auto payments from our end on September 9th.
  •  If you pay in person on (or, let's be real, AROUND) the 1st of the month, please pay by cash or check ASAP. Jacob will be back next week if you would like to pay by credit. I will be at the gym Friday for the 4:30 PM WOD if you would like to pay by credit shortly before or after that workout.
  • If you have a punch card, please use up your punches this month. They will not be transferable once Kyle takes over on October 1.
We want the transition between owners to be as smooth as possible, so please ask us any questions you have as soon as they arise.

5 Years...and Beyond.

From stage to pullup station
Humble beginnings
Oh my. The day has come. We are selling our first baby.

NOT BROOKS, you weirdos.

We are selling our first baby, Warrior CrossFit Muscatine. Five years ago (which is not so long ago, but is SO. LONG. AGO), Jacob and I quit our jobs and hauled our two cats and worldly possessions back to our family here in Muscatine. We jumped into the void by opening a CrossFit box in a town that really had never heard of CrossFit. We opened in a building over 100 years old that was home to a bar with a shag rug full of fleas before we moved in, and that rattled and shook every time a loaded barbell dropped to the ground or the bass went too deep. Honestly, I’m surprised any of y’all took a chance on us in the early days — before there was a beginner’s class, before there was a concrete floor, before there was dedicated parking, before there wasn’t carpet involved in your WOD.

Jacob and I poured our hearts into building the WCFM community. We believe deeply in a life of functional fitness and striving for more — in and out of the gym. The box is basically an extension of how we live our lives. We believe progress in the gym is built on perseverance and persistence as well as dedication to the basics. It is no different for either of us outside of the gym. That is why our motto has always been “Tada gun irracht”, which is Gaelic for “Nothing without effort.”

Anyone remember the Holiday Stroll WOD-a-Thon?
Move in day at the current location
But now it is time for new challenges and priorities. For me, it is motherhood and caring for our two boys each day. During this season of life, anything outside of keeping these babies loved, fed, safe, and alive is very much secondary. I feel lucky when I can fit a WOD into my day. For Jacob, it is fatherhood and working his way toward a Doctorate in Physical Therapy through South College. This demanding 2-year program leaves little time for other endeavors.

We love our WCFM community. We are not going anywhere. You will still see Jacob coaching, just at fewer times. You will still see me, working out when I can between tantrums, naps, and feedings. We are transferring ownership to Kyle Jack, who we feel confident will carry on the values encapsulated by “Tada gun irracht”. He started with us as an athlete that knew little of CrossFit, but soon embraced the programming, movements, and ethos of functional fitness. Eventually, he created and ran our Beginners’ On-Ramp Program. Since then, he has become our second-in-command as Jacob continued his Air Force Reserve duties and I retired from coaching.

Baby bells
Kyle is one of you — he started where you started and he continues striving for more. He’s been our teammate and cheerleader, an athlete, a coach, and now he will take over as fearless leader and champion of the WCFM community. We hope you continue to support him and this community as we transition through ownership. Please do not hesitate to ask us or Kyle any questions you have about what comes next for WCFM.

We are indebted to the Founding Members that had faith in us from that first crazy month and to those of you who have joined us since. CrossFit is nothing without the people sweating alongside each other. The friendships (and romantic relationships!) we have seen develop over these last 5 years are proof that we are doing something right. Thank you to each and every person who walked through our doors and filled out a waiver. Each of you gave us a reason to care, a reason to be better coaches, and a reason to make a positive impact on the wider Muscatine community. Thank you for believing in us and making this crazy leap worth every single ounce of the effort. You’ve made us better people.

A few things to note before we officially pass the torch on October 1, 2016:
  • Kyle will be transferring everyone to automatic payments through a different payment system. Your fees will be similar or the same if you commit to a membership versus paying month-to-month. Stop in or email him at kylejack27@hotmail.com if you have specific questions.
  • No need to cancel your current PayPal account. I will be pulling the plug on September 9th since everyone is pro-rated through the month.
  • Punch card people -- all five of you :) -- Use up those punches by the end of September.
  • There will still be a WCFM calendar photo shoot on Saturday, October 29th.
Again, do not hesitate to ask us or Kyle ANY questions about this new chapter in WCFM's story. We are confident that we are placing this community into very capable and caring hands.

From the blog archives, Friday 03.30.12:

During WODs, we all think about the clock ticking. We can't help it. And when we're surrounded by other people, we can't help but want to be done more quickly or with more rounds than SOMEONE. Coming in last for the day is something I'm well-versed in, so it's not such a big deal (any more). And it's not usually a big deal when I know I put in my best for that day and I made each rep count with full range of motion. During a WOD, my mental soundtrack usually includes me repeating my current rep number in my head like a mantra as I move all the way through a movement (especially a burpee). Twelve... twelve... twelve... breathe... thirteen... thirteen... thirteen.

That's my method, but I've seen others. Maybe you always grab a piece of chalk, or you too drone out a mantra as you keep count, or maybe you watch your neighbor and assume you're moving about the same speed. Do you round down your reps when you lose count, or do you say "I'm pretty sure that was about 50 reps" and move on to the next exercise or round? Do you aim for full depth on each and every squat, despite it taking longer? Do you aim for your chin over the bar on each pullup? Do you dock yourself a rep when you judge that you did not complete the full range of motion for that rep? Or do you say: "Good enough. I was close enough. I got high/low enough."

I believe that how I train is how I race. Training is practice. Whether I'm in the gym training to be more functional in the race of every day life, or whether I'm training to be more durable in a long-distance run, the integrity of my training will indicate the integrity of my race. If I practice sloppy movement, then I see sloppy results. My half-marathon of February 2011 was proof of this fact. My training was half-assed, and I saw my worst finish time EVER. However, when I practice quality, full range-of-motion movement, I see quality results. My lifts go up in weight, my endurance builds, my movements progress in difficulty, and every day life becomes easier.

So I wonder if increased range-of-motion (e.g., deep, ass-to-grass squats) indicates an increase in overall functionality? Is an increase in functionality therefore an indicator of increased overall fitness? Is increased overall fitness one of the main motivators for working out? If yes, then would limited range of motion (that is NOT caused by injury or lack of stretching/self-care), be an indicator of limited functionality, and therefore limited fitness? And if we limit our fitness by not practicing full range-of-motion and adequate stretching/self-care, then how does this affect our every day functionality? How does this affect our sport-specific functionality? Does cheating our reps in WODs result in cheating our overall fitness? Can you spot the difference between a good rep and a "No Rep"? Does the difference matter? What do you think?

WOM Michelle Marine
Meet March's (Alliterative) Warrior of the Month
Michelle Marine

1. Describe your athletic background.
I don’t have much athletic background as I’ve never played competitive team sports ever. I did take up long distance running in my mid 20s and completed one full marathon in Okinawa, Japan and many more halves in Japan and Arizona. I quit running when I started having babies 12 years ago though and didn’t do anything athletic again until starting at WCF Muscatine.

2. Can you discuss the balance between juggling your kids' schedule and still finding the time to consistently train?
It’s really hard to juggle four busy kids’ schedules and also to train consistently. The kids have afternoon or evening activities almost every week day which makes afternoons hard, and the noon class comes just a little too early in our homeschooling days. The kids and I also travel a lot so I was pretty hit and miss at CrossFit for the first year and half, only training once or twice a week if I was lucky. Sporadic training isn’t productive and really just frustrated me because I never saw much improvement and was always sore.

Dan had been bugging me for a while to go to the 5:30 am class with him, but I was resistant. Who wants to get up before 5 am? But after very little improvement in over a year, I knew the only way to get stronger was to work out in the mornings. I told Dan around Christmas to make me go with him at 5:30 am and he’s been only too happy to oblige. So far in 2016, I’ve worked out three times a week almost every single week. Working out in the mornings has been key for me and I’m actually making progress now and finally feeling stronger!

3. Favorite exercise?
Running and rowing.

4. Least favorite?
Overhead squats and burpees.

5. Goals within the next year?
I’d like to be able to do a pull-up and kick into a handstand. I’d also like to start running again and participate in a race or two.

6. I know you come from a long distance running background. Can you discuss how CrossFit has supplemented this endeavor?
CrossFit would supplement long distance running very nicely, but I haven’t logged many miles in over 12 years. I would like to start running again this year and slowly work my way back up to a half marathon. I’m hoping it will be much easier to start running now than it was when I first began in my 20s, because I think I’m stronger now than I’ve ever been. I could be totally wrong, though. I’ll have to let you know.

7. You have a food blog that has a substantial following. Can you discuss what kind of foods give you energy and help you recover from WODs?
The honest answer for what helps me recover is coffee, as it’s the only thing I can stomach for a couple of hours after the 5:30 am WOD. I also drink a lot of water during the WOD or in the car on the way home and I think it’s very helpful too. Overall, our diet isn’t tragic – I grow a lot of our veggies in the summer and raise egg and meat chickens. Whole foods, a diet rich in veggies, fruit, and protein gives me energy. We try to eat local, organic, and in-season, and I cook mostly from scratch. We drink a lot of green smoothies, and I like hard boiled eggs from my happy chickens. We also like nuts and eat a lot of beans. We don’t subscribe to any one diet and I also like jalapeno kettle chips, feta cheese, red wine, and carbs. So there’s always plenty of room for improvement

8. What advice do you have for newbies?
My biggest piece of advice is to show up. Most of my battle is just getting to the gym. I've found everyone at WCF Muscatine to be welcoming, helpful, and friendly. If you show up consistently, and try hard, you'll make progress.
