Over the past couple of weeks, some of you noticed my absence at the afternoon WODs. During that time, I coached the morning WODs then spent the rest of my days doing a few things unrelated to WCFM. The past two days I served on a jury and my, what an educational experience! I'm glad for the opportunity, and I am glad it is over. Prior to jury duty, I spent the last two weeks of August finishing up some contract work for my former full-time employer, NOAA Fisheries Service. The end of August was my deadline for completing all my work, so I was hustling to the finish. In Florida, I worked on endangered marine species like sea turtles, seagrass, and corals. My federal job had two parts: regulatory review of permits for in-water construction projects (e.g., dock construction, beach renourishment), and development of new regulations for species listed as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act. It all sounds very lofty and profound, but as the old saying goes: "If you like sausage and you like the law, do not watch the making of either."
My contract work had me reviewing public comments related to the second part of my former job -- development of new regulations, which is often a very elaborate collaborative process. If you ever did a group project at any time during school, then you know how "collaborative" processes tend to go. In fact, jury deliberations were much the same. Both processes reminded me how grateful I am for WCFM. I love going to "work" each day, I love my co-worker, and I love helping each of you, our athletes. It is wonderful that I am still able to do some contract work, which allows me to keep a toe in the waters of species conservation, and I very much appreciate the process of helping each of you reach your health and fitness goals. It was difficult splitting time between the demands of my contract terms, jury duty, and WCFM; however, the time away made me appreciate WCFM all that much more. It is good to be back.
