Meet June's Warrior of the Month!
Jerry Dusek
Why did you start CrossFitting?
I knew I was getting really out of shape, and I had some success with walking over a lunch hour or lifting weights while my son was at practice. However, I always had “other obligations” that have cropped up and I lost interest in working on the exercising by myself. Also, from past experience, exercising has kept my stress levels down. So seeing that there was a box near where I work, I asked come of my co-workers about CrossFit and they really encouraged me to try the two free workouts. I have been hooked since.
Favorite Exercise?
Wall Squats, rowing, Dead Lifts
Least Favorite?
Pull Ups, Dips, Doubleunders
Athletic goals in the next year (CrossFit or otherwise)?
For CrossFit it would be able to do a strict pull-up and a doubleunder. Once I can do those, I would like to try the CrossFit Games Open next year. Outside of CrossFit, I would like to be able to go hiking and enjoy waterfalls that are more than a couple of miles from where the parking lot is.
Advice for people new to CrossFit?
First is to get in and give everything a try for the WOD to find your weaknesses and then, work on your weaknesses. When I first started last November, I could not do a sit up or more than three or four modified pushups or even a decent single under. By sticking to coming at least twice a week, progress will come, especially on the weaknesses. Second is to give your all for the workout and do not worry about not completing the prescribed WOD. As the WOD comes back around from time to time, you will notice a difference by doing more reps, better times, or more weight. Last, have someone to encourage you during the low points and share your successes, whether that person is already doing CrossFit or coming with you to try it for the first time, or someone to talk to otherwise. I got really lucky when my wife, Michelle, started with me (and my two sons, Mark and Ethan) and we encourage each other. And now by doing CrossFit since November, we have been able to be encouraged by others and encourage others that do CrossFit.
Favorite workout music?
I like to work out to the classic rock, but once the workout begins, I rarely pay attention to the music. I have gotten to listen to different music, which has added to some additional music to listen to at home.
