Dear Warrior Nation --

Jacob and I have a special request. If you care about public green space in downtown Muscatine, then we urge you to sign the petition to keep Iowa Field GREEN and PUBLIC. If you are not digitally-minded, we have a hard copy available at the gym.

Here's the situation: According to the Muscatine Journal, the City is considering "a proposal to turn over Iowa Field, a 3-acre green space at the 1100 block of Iowa Avenue, to the Pierce family, owners of Pierce Furniture Co., 141 Colorado St. Iowa Field and undisclosed financial considerations would be handed over to the family in exchange for the right to reconfigure and reconstruct Colorado Street, including its “S” turn, which the city plans to do in 2013-14."

Jacob and I frequently wander over to Iowa Field for a walk or to play Frisbee (no joke) on the weekends. One of things I love about my favorite cities (e.g., Chicago, IL; St. Petersburg, FL; Washington, DC) is the amount of public green space available, and not just along the scenic waterfronts. Having pockets of open space within communities attracts new residents (because people like to live in pretty places), keeps home values high (which, by-the-way, keeps property taxes higher), and contributes to active, healthy lifestyles (which decreases public health costs!). I am less likely to go for a walk if there is nothing worth looking at or experiencing during my walk. Iowa Field is something worth looking at and experiencing, and we know others that feel the same way. It is an oasis in downtown residential Muscatine.

The City has other options available for the Colorado St. reconstruction, and Iowa Field costs approximately $300 annually for the City to maintain (the grass gets mowed 10 times a year). Help us keep Muscatine the pearl of the Mississippi by preserving our public green spaces. Sign the petition, call or email our City Council members, and please show your support at the next City Council meeting on Thursday, October 4 at 7 PM. Thanks for reading :)

And now to our regularly-scheduled programming....

THE FRONT RACK POSITION.
Learn it, know it, love it.

You need it not only for front squats, but for effective squat cleans and for all the overhead lifts. The front rack position protects your wrists as the weight goes up because the bar rests on your shoulders. No one wants their wrists to snap off mid-lift. Not only would it be messy, it would hurt like a mutha.

If you learned the front rack position and you know it, then there is still time to love it. We know this is a painful position for many of you, and the question always is: how can I make it more comfortable? That's where our buddies over at MobilityWOD come in to save the day. In the end, the onus is on you, dear Warrior, to attack those trouble spots on a regular basis in order to improve how you feel in and out of the gym. So if you're having front rack issues, give this video a view and start incorporating this sh*t into your warm up during those few minutes before class starts or even better, AFTER you WOD (when your muscles are warm) EVERY TIME.
