What is your athletic background?
I didn't really have an athletic background. I grew up on a farm and wasn't able to participate in athletic activities. However, the large work load on the farm meant that I stayed in relatively decent shape until I left. I started competing in Practical Shooting competitions in 2011, and it lead me to wanting to get into shape. CrossFit was suggested by some top level shooters as a great way to prepare for competition, but I was hesitant to start because I thought I was too out of shape (I really wish I hadn't waited). So in September of 2011 I started running and eating cleaner and by May of 2012 I finally realized how silly it was to get into shape so I could work out. I went to the [WCFM] Foundations class and haven't looked back.
What is your favorite exercise/workout?
My favorite workouts involve heavy lifting, and usually are not for time (Big 24 rocks).
What is your least favorite exercise/workout?
The ones that I dread are the ones with a really high rep scheme (though they do come with a great sense of accomplishment when you finish).
What are your goals for the next year?
This year I would like to run the Quad Cities Half Marathon; finish "Fran" as prescribed in under 10 minutes; and deadlift twice my body weight.
What advice do you have for people just starting CrossFit?
My advice for anyone starting or thinking about starting CrossFit is to have fun with it, and give it all you have. While I love the competitive aspect of CrossFit, it doesn't matter if you lifted less than everyone else, or if you had the slowest time, as long as you pushed your limits and got a great workout -- you still win.
